My Students
Many of my students find school challenging: either they struggle to sit still and focus for sufficient periods of time to develop reading skills or their disabilities make reading and writing into anxiety-invoking or monumentally challenging tasks. Many of my students have such diagnoses as ADHD, Autism, Learning Disabilities, Emotional Disabilities, etc.
Give many of my students a hammer or screw driver, and they excel, give them a book to read, and they forget that they are skilled and smart.
My goal is to help them realize that much as they've learned to use that tool to fix or build something, they can also learn tools and techniques to improve their school performance. They need texts they can relate to thematically and the ability to connect with authors to realize that they can overcome challenging situations, use writing as a means of communication as well as a creative outlet.
My Project
My students need a class set of "Hey Kiddo" by Jarrett J. Krosoczka such that they can be gifted the ability to read a text to which they can truly relate: a local author, a familiar setting, and a protagonist who is their age facing some of the struggles with which they may contend: living with grandparents, dealing with addiction in the family, recognizing that despite struggles, they, too can rise above and become successful adults.
The graphic novel format of the text makes it perfect for my most struggling readers.
Not only is the text itself student-friendly, but the illustrations help those who struggle with visualization, making it the perfect text for their consumption!
