My Students

I have the honor of teaching music to ALL students at our middle school in Denver, CO. Our school prides itself on being integrated culturally, socioeconomically, and intellectually. This means that we have a wide range of musical abilities and passions. Each student approaches this class from a very unique experience and that is what makes their music and creative work so powerful.

My students are incredibly creative, thoughtful, and responsible and I want to be able to give them every opportunity to experience music.

We have many opportunities to create music and learn how to listen, but fewer opportunities to play and perform which is why I would like to invest in more instruments for our classroom. Ukulele first came to mind for me because they are easier to learn and create music on (giving my students a feeling of success) while still being able to be used for all genres of music.

My Project

This project would allow all students to have the opportunity to learn Piano and Ukulele in my classroom. Currently, we do not have enough instruments for everyone to participate in playing actual music at the same time. Having ukuleles would mean we could work on singing, piano, and ukulele all at the same time.

We would be able to perform regularly for our community and classmates.

Students would be accessing music at a more achievable level and would have an easier time learning new songs. Our large class sizes mean that students can often be overlooked or unengaged, but having a class opportunity to perform where each student was responsible for their own element would hold students accountable and engage them more authentically.
