This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My kindergarten students love school!

They love to talk, investigate and explore. I teach kindergarten at a Title I school in Texas where my students are hungry for new opportunities that they do not get at home, such as cooking. Cooking with 5 year-olds can be a daunting proposition. But the academic and social benefits of cooking outweigh the hassle.

My Project

My students need a convection oven to participate in cooking activities. Cooking goes hand in hand with a kindergarten classroom and we need a convection oven to make this possible. When my students help out with cooking they are learning many key skills in many different academic areas. While participating in cooking activities, kindergartners will: develop fine motors skills by working with cooking utensils; experience scientific change by mixing ingredients; identify common words by reading a recipe; practice math skills when measuring; experience cultural diversity with recipes from different families in our classroom; learn social skills by working together; develop organization skills; and develop critical thinking skills. The list goes on ....

Getting my students involved cooking can have long lasting effects on their self esteem, their academics, as well as their eating habits.

I've found cooking with my students is great fun and it's a terrific way to get them interested in what they eat. With healthy recipes, cooking lessons can motivate and empower my students to develop healthy eating habits. It's an educational opportunity not to be missed. Thank you so much for your consideration!
