This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Students at my school and in my classroom are full of life. They are interested in the world around them, socially, environmentally, and technologically. That's what middle schoolers are like. A majority of my students have Hispanic heritage, many are first generation American citizens. About 60% of the student population is receiving free or reduced lunch, which indicates the poverty level. They have challenges that are different from any I faced growing up, and every day they amaze me with their fortitude!

My Project

Many people remember math as a boring class. For those who don’t, it is most likely because their math teacher provided exciting and engaging activities as they learned both the basics and the complexities of math concepts. Most of us learn best by exploring, trying different strategies, and creating our own understanding of the topic. For math, one way to accomplish this kind of learning is to incorporate lots of hands on activities, games, puzzles and learning props. The materials I’ve requested are ones I’ve researched by asking teachers and students what could make these lessons more engaging. For example, geometric shapes for creating irregular areas, axes stamps, a microphone so students can hear better, rainbow fraction tiles and strategy games. As a math teacher, I strive to make students’ math education far from boring!
