The heart of my classroom is my students. I am a certified Reading Specialist and English as a Second Language teacher who works with language learners who are new to the country or 2nd generation immigrants. I also work with Kindergarten-2nd Grade students needing literacy intervention and enrichment services.
My students are in grades K-2, speak several languages, and represent the diversity within our country.
They speak English, Spanish, Arabic, Portuguese, German, and Chinese. Some of my students traveled on foot with their parents from different regions in Central America in order to attend school in the United States. They are seen in 45 minute-1 hour groups during pullout intervention and enrichment blocks for RTI and ESL classes. More time spent engaged with enjoyable literacy tasks matched to their developmental needs is key to their success.
My Project
The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts defines arts integration as "an approach to teaching in which students construct and demonstrate understanding through an art form". Using children's literature for other famous artists, my students have been able to utilize the various reading strategies that they are being taught in differentiated reading, writing, listening, and speaking tasks. They have been able to demonstrate their learning by creating their own masterpieces in the style of the artists that we are studying and writing about their thinking throughout the process.
As a Reading Specialist and an ESL Teacher in a Title I School, I work with students who come to school with limited English exposure or who are working to overcome reading deficits due to limited background building experiences.
By using high-quality children's literature about famous artists and reproductions of their artwork, I help my students develop the thinking skills that the new generation standards ask of them in our arts integrated STEM units. This project will add needed books to our classroom library that represent the contributions African Americans have given our country and add additional books to our classroom library that more of my students can identify with. Your gift will help me use my own money to purchase art supplies and additional resources for my students' STEM activities.
