Here Comes the Sun to Orangewood

My students need hands-on materials to fully understand the basic principles of solar energy and its potential. Solar car models will bring these concepts to life.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The Sun IS coming to Orangewood and we want to capture it! The challenge is HOW! Solar energy is becoming a reality but understanding how it works is still a mystery to many. Our solar car studies will give students hands-on experience as they learn the basic principles of solar energy.

Everyone faces challenges of some kind but many of my students have more than their fair share.

In our Title I school, 85% of students qualify for the free lunch program. A social worker, counselor, and health and dental referrals provide our students with basic services. As a K-8 school, many of our older students shoulder child care responsibilities for siblings. What we lack in funds, however, we more than make up for with our energy, creativity, enthusiasm for learning, and our eagerness to try something new! With education as the key to meeting and overcoming these challenges, our students work overtime. Coming before school, staying after school, on weekends, and in summer, our students are putting in the extra hours, building the academic foundations needed for future success.

My Project

Studies of renewable energy can be difficult to relate to inside a classroom with a textbook. Hands-on studies of solar energy using solar car models as the "vehicle" teaches students the underlying principles in an authentic way. If you don't get it right, the car doesn't move. Working in teams, students will use the solar car models as the basis for their ultimate designs. Beginning with some initial instruction on how PV cells work (angle is everything!), teams will first build the model as directed; testing, collecting data, troubleshooting, and then competing with other teams. After the initial round of testing, student teams will then modify and redesign their cars. Using the components from the original model (not to be permanently modified) and recycled materials (cardboard, straws, etc.), teams will develop models for further competitions with the whole school as spectators. Regular R&D and de-briefing sessions among teams will further students' learning.

Many of my students will work in fields that don't exist today.

To prepare and compete in a more global economy, it's critical that they develop not only the academic foundations but also a love for learning. What better way to foster that love than through hands-on science investigations? An ancient proverb says, "I hear and I forget; I see and I remember; I do and I understand." Involving my middle school students in hands-on study of solar energy will provide much understanding!
