My Students

The gift of music is priceless. It is the noise that brings joy and excitement to the young children in my classroom each day. Providing rhythm instruments for the little people I teach would be a dream come true!

I have the pleasure of teaching a bright, energetic, and wonderful group of ethnically diverse kindergarten children from low income families.

More than half of these students live in the community, and a percentage of them are bused from surrounding areas of the city. Several of my students are on Individual Learning Plans (IEP) due to special learning and behavioral abilities. Supporting all of my children with creative lessons is essential to their growth and development. The school is a free lunch urban public school located in a high crime area. Despite the challenges these children face from day to day, they come to school very eager to learn and participate in various extra curricular activities.

My Project

Kindergarten is a time for exploration and fun. Music, whether it be a listening experience or movement activities/lessons, provides a playful, energetic and positive environment. With this in mind, the addition of rhythm instruments in the classroom will increase the joy of learning. It is also a way to integrate math, problem solving, humanities, as well as other subject matter. For instance, the children and I will have the opportunity to learn lessons about patterns, counting, scales, different genres of music, dance steps, the origin of specific instruments, and how to build character and work as a team. I love to create excitement among the children. It gives them so much joy, which is a feeling they never forget.

The arts had a profound impact on my life.

Playing instruments, participating in school dance troops, and glee club in elementary school was a platform that I have stood on throughout my life. The arts allowed me academic success, creativity, and character early on, which is what I anticipate for my kindergarteners.
