My students are talented and motivated artists who work hard to combine their love of the arts with their academic studies. We are an art school in NYC where students from diverse backgrounds are united in their dedication to artistic and academic excellence. Approximately three-fourths of my students are female.
Through hands-on, engaging learning activities, all our students explore the world around them.
In my advanced biology class, my artistic students will see the science that shapes the world around us. Understanding the science of climate change, disease, and human health will empower my students to shape the world around them positively. Science, technology, and policy shape the future. Gaining scientific knowledge will give my students' voices power as they make choices that will impact our futures.
My Project
A descendent of freed slaves, Henrietta Lacks was an African American tobacco farmer who got cervical cancer when she 30. She died one year later but her cells collected without her knowledge or consent live on today. My advanced biology students will learn so Henrietta's infamous HeLa cells, biotechnology, ethics, racial injustice and scientific research.
With the opportunity to read the book, the Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks my advanced biology students will see how science changes the world and changes lives of people directly.
Henrietta Lacks and her descendants have been the key to the polio vaccine, cloning, and gene mapping yet they have not been compensated or recognized for their contribution to world we live in today. Reading this story will allow the science to come alive, as my students consider if there is a science can used to positively change the world without silencing the marginalized.
