Helping to Provide Successful Learning for Thriving Students

My students need noise canceling headphones and privacy folders to be continue to thrive.

This project expired on January 10, 2018.

My Students

I teach special education at a richly diverse Title I school. There are students from a large variety of cultures and backgrounds that attend.

As a special education teacher, I am always striving to find different ways to teach my students a wide variety of different skills.

It is my job to help them build upon their foundational skills so that they may continue to grow and learn as a student in the general education classroom. The students that I teach have a wide variety of disabilities and may struggle with learning how to read, write, socializing, and math. They are friendly, social, curious, motivated, hard-working, and want to do well in school. As their teacher, I strive to make learning fun and I am always trying to come up with a variety of new strategies to teach them.

Together, we are working to build up their self-confidence, self-concept, and self-advocacy skills, along with their educational skills. I want to continue to teach my students lifelong skills that will help them be successful adults in the future. I want to be able to give them the tools they need to be successful learners both inside and outside the classroom.

My Project

I am a Special Education teacher, teaching grades K-5. Many of my students often have learning, emotional, and sensory needs. They need to be able to move, and wiggle while also addressing their sensory needs so that they may continue to be successful learners.

I often see many different groups of children at once, whom all have their own individual needs.

For example, there may be a group of 5 first grade students learning about phonics and decoding while another small group of third grade students are learning about math, all in the same classroom. While I strive to provide a supportive, empowering, creative, and safe classroom, it can be hard for my students to focus when there are many other things going on the classroom at once. There may be math games going on at the same time other students are trying to learn how to read.

My students would benefit from having access to noise canceling headphones and privacy folders. This will allow for those students whom are easily distracted to stay focused because they will be able to cancel out some of the noises and use the privacy folders to further help them focus at their desk.

In addition, my students will be able to use these supplies both in my classroom as well as in their general education classrooms. All of my students are in the general education classroom and come to my resource room for extra academic support. Almost all of my students are at least two years behind academically and need the best support they can receive in order to continue to make progress in the general education curriculum.
