My Students

I am the school counselor at CECT, which is located in Concord, NC. We opened our doors officially on August 11, 2016, so this is our very first year of our high school. Our school is an early college, which means that our students receive their high school diploma and associate’s degree by the end of their four years in high school. At this time, we are very, very small! We only have 9th grade, which consists of 62 students.

The aim of the early college model is to graduate students who earn a high school diploma, as well as two years of transferable college credit or an associate degree, all at no cost to their families.

The target population for early colleges is first generation college-goers, those at-risk of dropping out, or other historically underserved populations.

My Project

Because we serve historically underserved populations, there are several social/emotional needs that I, as a school counselor, need to address. I do this in many ways, including individual counseling, small group counseling, and whole group activities. As research states, small group counseling is extremely effective in schools. It gives students the opportunity to connect with peers who are struggling with similar home, personal, and school situations. This year, I am hoping to conduct at least 9 small groups that will focus on a range of academic, social, and emotional needs. These groups will target about half of our student population.

Because we are such a small school with very limited funding, I am in need of curriculum, Talk with Teens About What Matters to Them, to support some of these needs.

I am also in need of bean bags (furniture) to hold students for small group counseling.
