Helping Students with Autism Play to Learn!

My Students

Children with autism require sensory stimulation throughout the school day in order to maintain self-regulation and meet their sensory needs. They also need unique, engaging play experiences in order to develop play and communication skills that are critical in their development!

My students are all on the autism spectrum and attend a public school in Virginia.

They are a wonderful group of eager learners whose enthusiasm inspires me every day. My students require a variety of unique multisensory teaching strategies in order to address their developmental and functional needs throughout the school day. They love learning and learn best through visual and tactile methods, music, and play activities that teach critical life skills.

My Project

In order to provide the engaging sensory and play activities to teach critical life skills as well as meet their sensory needs, my students need a sand and water table as well as a variety of tactile materials. These materials will help me create fun learning opportunities that foster play and communication skills that are critical for my students. Learners with autism also require various sensory opportunities and input throughout the day in order to meet their sensory needs and to self-regulate. The sand and water table will allow me to adequately address many tactile, sensory needs within the classroom environment.

Having a sand and water table will greatly impact my students every day, as it provides sensory stimulation and creates authentic, engaging play and communication learning opportunities.
