Helping Students See Themselves Through Literature

Help me give my students the opportunity to be exposed to literature that they can identify with by seeing characters who have disabilities like they do. Help them learn social skills through games and art.

My Students

I teach students with severe disabilities. This includes Autism, Down Syndrome, intellectual disabilities, physical disabilities, etc. Some of my students are verbal and some are nonverbal. My nonverbal students are working to use devices and pictures to help them communicate. These students attend a post high program. This means they are 18 to 22 years old. It is a federally funded school through our local school district. We help students transition from school to life. We focus on teaching daily living skills and employment skills including riding public transportation. Our instruction is individualized to each student and is focused on what they need to learn to be successful after leaving the school system.

My students love to learn and attend school!

I want to continue to foster this love of learning for them.

My Project

I want my students to be able to engage in literature with characters who have disabilities. This allows them to see themselves in the books they are reading. I want my students to see more than a white neurotypical person. These books will help diversify our classroom bookshelf. These games will allow my students to learn the social skills they need to participate in these games. They learn to take turns and be positive with others. This art supplies will allow my students to participate in hands on art projects.

I love teaching my students and anything you are willing to donate will be amazing.
