My Students

We live in a rural, low income school district. We have a high percentage of students that lack emotional and academic support at home. Our students and staff have had a difficult time adopting a growth mid set way of thinking. Our academics have struggled recently with the switch to the common core standards. That is something that I am trying to change in my classroom and with the students that I work with.

My position as a reading specialist is to help struggling readers be successful.

I am focused on helping my students succeed not only in school, but as they try to be functional citizens in society. With our high percentage of students that lack emotional support, their self esteem can be low as well. I am trying to help them so that their academics is one thing that does not hold them back.

My Project

I have been reading "The Next Step Forward in Guided Reading" by Jan Richardson. I am implementing these strategies into my 1st grade Reading Classroom. Next school year I will also be teaching 4th grade reading. We are working more explicitly on phonics instruction and sight word instruction, which we have found as a whole, our students are lacking. I will be focusing on the foundations of early literacy.

The growth I have already seen is amazing!

I did a leveled reading test on the 1st graders in my class, and from there have individualized their instruction to better suit their needs and help them grow academically.
