Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Our public school, which recently opened, serves a population of 52% English as Second Language Learners and 78% of our students receive free/reduced lunch. I teach kindergarten to creative, eager learners who have little materials at home. Because the school is new, we are just building a relationship with parents and the community to help support our students learning in and outside of the classroom. I am often looking for ways to link the classroom activities with home and community volunteers.

Many students do not have supplies to use at home to extend their classroom learning for reading, writing, and math. Volunteers and parents want to learn how to help and part of my teaching has been helping families with how to have fun with math and literacy at home. I'm often providing fun ideas to practice with paper copies of word cards for bingo or other games, printed board games, and books from the classroom. But these can get lost in the backpack shuffle from school,to bus, to home. A binder which I will call "Helping Hands handbook" is easy to care for and easy to use while young students wait for the bus,hang out at home, or anytime. And notes to parents can be included so that parents can more easily participate and help their children.

Helping Hands handbooks are an extra link between home and school and provide much needed extra practice for language arts and math. Students help create and play word and math games housed in their binders. Many students come from homes without reading and writing supplies available to them which can be included in the binder. New flash cards and games are added as the individual student is ready. Each week students can choose and slip books from the classroom into the binder to borrow and share with family members. Because the binder houses all the games and book, it is easy to transport. Students can see that reading and word games can be carried beyond the classroom and that they can have fun learning wherever they go.

You will make it possible for my students to increase their word,alphabet, and math knowledge while they have fun with games. All you are providing is the housing (binder). The students and teacher will create and pace the work that goes inside. Increased daily practice makes all the difference, especially to students who are at-risk or just beginning to learn a new language. But this handbook will be helping students AND parents know that learning is a fun activity, not a chore. Your help is appreciated each time they open the binder and seek the new challenges inside.
