Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Living in the beautiful city of Los Angeles requires teaching our students about diversity and cultural awareness. Every week, more newcomer students join our school; our job is to make them feel welcomed and valued. I work with an amazing group of students with disabilities K-3. Most of my students, 90% of them, are English Learners with a disability. I want to help develop their English language skills through drama and reader's theater, allowing my students to practice speaking English and improve their self-esteem with a sense of community.
With your help, we can provide our newcomer students with engaging and fun diverse materials to build confidence and improve their verbal and English communication skills.
My students come from diverse backgrounds (Latino, Filipino, and Korean), so being able to provide them with literacy materials and other resources will help give them access to a grade-level curriculum. We need props such as safari costumes and community helpers costumes for drama, reader's theater, and role-playing to develop the English language during our Astronomy unit with my first graders, and Animal Classification unit with my third graders. Teaching language through drama allows newcomer students to practice speaking English while interacting and learning from peers. Creating safe spaces for language development builds confidence and improves verbal and non-verbal communication skills.
I am also requesting phonics flashcards to help students improve language acquisition, memory, visual perception, and active thinking. Thank you so much for reading about our classroom.
