My students need these books and pencils in order for them to succeed in my class. The Hobbit Graphic Novels will be for those that need support while we read The Hobbit in class.
The students who come through my classroom are looking for a chance to improve their skills. Even though the majority of them are on free or reduced price lunch, our school's goal, and therefore the students' goal, is to get into college and get a higher education.
My students are stubborn and eager to learn new things.
Regardless of what we are going over in class, they do their best to take new and bigger strides to further their education. They don't stop until they accomplish their goals, and even those who struggle are able to improve and grow with the help of their peers.
My Project
We are reading J. R. R. Tolkien's The Hobbit in my 7th grade English class. My special education students and those on individual education plans are many times overwhelmed by the complex language of Tolkien. Having the graphic novels will be a huge benefit for them in helping them to have a clear picture of what's going on.
Every student should have the opportunity to succeed.
I have been trying for the first two quarters to figure out how to reach some of my special ed students, and this project, I think, is at least part of the answer. The reading strips are for my student with dyslexia and other students who are lower than their reading level that need a little extra help staying on track while we read.
The pencils will be for all students so we can work on art projects, but the audiobook for Hound of the Baskervilles and study guide will be for those that need that support with their reading. Even if this project isn't funded in time for it to affect these students this year, I read these novels every year with the next group of students, and I will be able to use these materials for all who come through my classroom.
