My school is located in North Philadelphia, in a high poverty neighborhood. My students range from 8 to 10 years old, and are in grades 3rd to 5th. They are also diagnosed with Autism.
They are very sweet, loving students, but require a lot of individualization in order to learn.
This requires a lot of materials for differentiation. The class is a mixture of verbal and nonverbal students, which requires additional resources and materials. Some students require a 1 on 1 assistant for daily activities.
My classroom needs more technology for learning. My school is in the inner city and most of my students have no technology at home. In my classroom, we currently have 2 Chromebooks from an earlier DonorsChoose project for 8 students to share. This can be tricky at times. I am requesting an iPad instead of another Chromebook because I have 3 children in my classroom who are not able to appropriately use a Chromebook. They can not move their fingers on the mouse pad to navigate activities.
Using iPads, the students with more severe autism can just touch the apps they want to use with ease.
I do have another project up for an iPad for downloading communication apps. This ipad is needed specifically for math and reading apps that can be accessed through the Apple store to help enhance learning, build on the technology already in the classroom, and involve all students in using technology appropriately.
