Hello! I am the Academic Intervention Services teacher for grades K-2 at PS 9 in Brooklyn, NY. To the kids, I'm simply the reading helper. Struggling students come to my classroom for small group phonics and guided reading lessons. The most effective way to learn how to read is to read. While lessons provide necessary guidance, children need opportunities to apply new skills through reading independently. Unfortunately, with all that needs to be taught in an elementary school classroom, only one period a day is allotted for independent reading. After the lesson, this usually amounts to 20-30 minutes a day. The children are assigned an additional 30 minutes of reading for homework; and here in lies the problem. My students are more than willing to read at home, however, the majority of them do not have appropriately leveled books to read. I am asking for the materials needed to create a check-out library in my classroom. The library will give students a chance to take home books that both interest them and are at their reading level. I know this sounds basic, but my school does not have a library. I am asking for organizational bins, starter books and labels for levels Kindergarten through 2nd grade (also known as Levels A-J).
