This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Located in NE Atlanta, our 6-12 single gender academy for young girls and boys offers enrollment to students throughout the city. As a Title I school over 98% of our student population receives free or reduced-price lunch. Our school is located in a neighborhood that has transitioned and primarily has a number of both single home and apartment buildings for senior citizens. As a community school a major focus is to not just serve our students and families but to also serve the community members. Every fourth Tuesday of the month we provide both perishable and non-perishable food to both our students and community members.
Every month in an effort to distribute food we battle with both the weather and a lack of supplies to assist our families who are receiving needed food items.
On average we serve approximately 65 households ever month and between 50 and 75 students. Our monthly food distributions assist so many of our students and families who just don't have enough food to make it through the month.
My Project
Our school has very limited space and as a result we have to set up and distribute our monthly food items outdoors in our school parking lot. The first few months of school typically brings very warm weather (90 degrees or higher) so having a portable tent to provide shelter form the Georgia sun would help us tremendously.
Our students and families line up to receive food on average 30 minutes before our start time.
The requested items will assist us as we prepare to meet the vast needs.
items. our students, parents and community members arrive many come without bags or boxes so we do our best to save used boxes to hold the distributed food items but having bags would be most helpful as well as a wagon to transport the items to the cars for our students and senior citizens.
The students and community members that I serve are in need of this additional food and it is my goal that we continue to provide this service every month.
