Ms. Montanaro from West Warwick RI is requesting art supplies through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.

Help Wakefield Hills Sculpt With Clay!

Help me give my students the experience of working with clay! Students LOVE clay! It's their favorite material to use. Students always ask when they will get the chance to work with clay.

My Students

My students eagerly await their time to participate in art. With busy bodies and creative minds, they enter the classroom ready to express themselves. Once seated, they often are observed squirming in their seats as they anticipate the topic of their upcoming project.

The school which I teach at is a Title I school - most of the students live in low-income households.

Oftentimes, they experience troubles at home. My students see my class as an opportunity to relieve their home stresses while expressing their creative side.

My Project

Students are fortunate to have a kiln in our classroom. Students learn to build ceramic pieces through coil and slab construction. In second grade, I tie my curriculum to their homeroom classroom's curriculum. In their homeroom classroom, students plant flower seeds to understand a plant's life cycle. To create cross-curricular connections their science unit, students create a decorative ceramic pot to place their flower seeds to grow.

In third grade, student learn about slab construction.

They work on building a container that they can store toys or playing cards.

In fourth grade, students learn about coil construction. For this project, students build a mug that is functional and can hold a hot beverage!
