This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Have you ever been curious about the customs and traditions of other cultures? In order to create unity in such a diverse city and society, it's vital for us to appreciate and understand different cultures. Art is an amazing way to explore, appreciate, and embrace these differences!
My vivacious students are from a high poverty public elementary school in NYC.
They are very proud of their culture and are very eager to learn more about other cultures that they are exposed to everyday. Our school promotes and understands the importance of a multicultural education and is a big supporter of achieving it through the arts. Unfortunately, we do not have enough funds to support expanding our knowledge through art.
My Project
The supplies I'm requesting are for creating art from a variety of different cultures. Some examples of how it will be used include: yarn for Navajo Story Weaving, Native American Dreamcatchers, and Huichol Indian Yarn Painting. The permanent markers are going to be used for a project on Aztec art and cultures who do metalwork. The patterned paper is going to be used for kente cloth and quilts inspired by the woman of Gee's Bend. The tape is to display and share the art with the community.
In such a diverse city it's important to create unity through understanding and appreciating different cultures.
This project is really important because our students are constantly surrounded by different cultures and see things that are different from their own culture. Art is such an enriching way to highlight the beauty of these cultural differences. This project will help them learn to take their curiosity of other cultures and explore it through art.
