Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
From our joyful morning greeting to the last bell, we believe every moment is a learning moment – a moment to shine, to grow, and to develop the academic, emotional, and social skills that lead to success.
My students need instruments to explore and discover the world around them.
Our school is located in Uniondale, NY. Our students are encouraged to take risks, ask questions openly, and explore a variety of cultures and creative arts. My students come from multicultural and various family backgrounds, including Spanish and Creole speaking families.
I am in my 6th year of teaching general music in the classroom. I currently teach kindergarten through fifth grade. Music class is a place where these diverse students can come together to be creative, artistic, and become musicians. My students are developing into amazing musicians through singing, dancing, playing instruments, and performing.
My school prides itself on being a school that believes developing positive character traits in children is just as important as developing their minds. Thus as of 2015, our school is recognized as a National School of Character.
My Project
Through music, our children can awaken the knowledge of themselves, their community, and their country. Through this ukulele program, every student (and teacher!) has access to level-specific, sequential resources to assist the learning of music through this wonderful, four-stringed tool.
Music is the memory of our people brought to life.
Playing ukulele introduces students to a form of musical involvement that can be enjoyed as a lifelong pursuit. Whether they continue with the ukulele, or transfer their knowledge to another instrument, the ability to sing and play can open up positive personal and social experiences throughout their lifetime.
Through music, our student’s build confidence, self-expression, creativity, build relationships and are excited about coming to school.
We feel that every child deserves the chance to an education, especially one which includes music. Studies have shown that it makes kids smarter, improves the quality of their education, increases brain size and activity, and helps to teach them the skills necessary for success later in life.
