Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I remember when my parents gave me a guitar during my first year of college - it was a life changing experience. The guitar became a critical outlet for artistic and emotional expression in my life; it remains so to the present day.
I teach at a Title I school in New York City serving low income students from neighborhoods in Washington Heights, Harlem and the Bronx.
Due to cuts in funding to music, theater and the arts, many public schools in NYC have eliminated arts and music education programs entirely. Our wonderful small school has a limited budget - and no music program to speak of. Consequently, none of my 12th grade art students have had any music education during their high school years. My students are an awesome group of kids who really, really want to learn how to rock out on the guitar! When I mentioned the possibility of getting guitars in the classroom, they were unanimous in their enthusiasm. With your help, we can make this a reality.
My Project
As a longtime rock music aficionado (and veteran guitar tutor), I would love an opportunity to teach my students how to play guitar and instill in them a greater appreciation of music in general. My students need 15 acoustic guitars, 15 capos, 10 packets of guitar strings, 15 tuners, and two packs of guitar picks. I want to teach basic chord structures, tuning, and a hands-on appreciation of rock, blues, and folk music. Students would learn to play and perform songs of their choosing in front of their peers; they would also research one musical artist whose work they will present to the class. If this takes off, we may even have a school-wide performance!
High school is a time which shapes many of our future experiences.
For my students, this may be their last shot to gain any music education - formal or informal - during this formative period. Please help us realize our goal! My students – and their teacher – would be oh-oh-oh so grateful!
