Our students are a lively bunch of curious three to five year old children! Our program serves children and families through Head Start, Universal PreK Colorado, and children with special needs. These are often children that have been identified as being at risk for educational attainment. We have a unique blend of student backgrounds, interests, and abilities. Some children have suffered traumatic experiences, many have special needs such as autism, motor, or language delays, and many live in low income housing.
Lighted sensory play promotes self-regulation, visual discrimination, social and problem solving skills, which are critical for young children's development and mental health.
Small motor and sensory activities are so important for their development. Sensory play builds nerve connections within the brain which support a child’s ability in completing more complex learning tasks. The light table helps support visual discrimination; especially in children with vision challenges. Sensory play also supports language development, cognitive growth, motor skills, problem solving skills, and social interaction. Sensory play is great for calming an anxious or frustrated child and decreasing stress. Children practice taking turns and working together at the light table. Friendships are made, no matter what language the child speaks or what skills the child has or doesn't have. All children are capable when they are openly exploring the rich textures and materials! Please help us to be able to provide light table materials that can easily be cleaned and sanitized to be used with the light table.
