The children in my classes love to go to the playground each day! Large motor activities are so important for their development. Children first develop their large, core muscles before they are able to refine their fine motor development for writing. Physical activity reduces obesity and increases coordination. Being able to do physical tasks such as balancing on a balance beam or a balance bike, or catching a ball supports their development of a positive self-esteem and self-confidence. This allows the children to master new skills in all areas of development. Big body play promotes social and problem solving skills, which are critical for young children's development and mental health. Children practice taking turns and working together with the playground equipment. Creativity is nourished as the children dig and explore in the sand and wood chips. Friendships are made, no matter what language the child speaks or what skills the child has or doesn't have. All children are capable when we are on the playground! Children with special needs and children from low income homes can't always access outdoor play materials or use typical playground structures. It is so important for children to have opportunities for big body play and rich exploration outside for our early childhood program. Please help us to be able to provide this to the children in our classes!
