I love working with the kids who come through our doors everyday. They can challenge and they can inspire. There are many schools in the US where kids come from tough situations, from school breakfast/lunch being the major meals for the day, to housing needs, to transportation needs. This is a reality for many of the students at my school.
The opportunity to be a kid is a short-lived time, and the staff I work with strive to provide as many opportunities to mentor, guide, and advocate for our students as we can.
Like many schools in the US, we battle the gang influence, children raising siblings because parents may be working or otherwise incapable. This makes the opportunity to get involved in athletics even more important. Therefore I work to outfit all my kids in everything they would need to participate in sporting activities. I never want finances, or a lack thereof, to be the deciding factor for participation.
Athletics is expensive, and the upkeep of equipment can chew up a budget. Adding some new protective equipment will give our kids the chance to compete. Every kid who suits up and dreams of throwing the winning touchdown for their favorite team in the Super Bowl doesn't imagine doing it in protective equipment that is nearly the same age as they are. This is the challenge we face. While many programs have their athletes purchase or rent their own equipment, we must provide all of the needs for our program. Helmets, shoulder pads, even cleats, everything is borrowed from us for the season and then returned. These pads are not the most expensive, but with the new technology trying to make football a safer sport, these pads will go a long way for us.
By donating to our shoulder pad request, our kids will get to feel "big time" at a time when expensive private leagues are pricing low-income families out of the game.
