I am a teacher in a Title I school, where "Learning is not a spectator sport, every day is GAMEDAY!" Our students come from low-income families where 65% receive free breakfast and lunch. Even though they face many hardships outside of the classroom, my students are hard-working, loving, and eager to learn.
There are so many learning opportunities to be done in the classroom, but sometimes they do not have all the resources to make that happen.
This is where we need YOUR help!
We are so grateful for your interest in our classroom. I sincerely thank you.
My Project
Engagement in independent reading is the greatest tool to create life-long readers and improve reading skills.
Research shows children who connect with meaningful reading materials experience greater reading achievement.
The amount of time that a child spends actively reading can be a significant indicator of this reading achievement. Putting great books in their hands is the only way to increase their engagement. However, at a school like mine, students often don't have access to books of their own, so it's up to me to "bless the books" by having a full, current, exciting library overflowing with books they will enjoy.
As students are more engaged, they begin want to share what they learn with their classmates and gain a desire to know more about the topic they chose - creating a community of readers. Giving children an opportunity to discuss their chosen reading material can help reinforce what they've learned. In my class, student use sticky notes to mark places in the text that reinforce what we're learning, places they want to discuss with me during individual conferences, and/or places they feel should be shared with the class.
With your donation, you can help arm my students with great books worthy of LOTS of sticky notes!
