My school is located on a US Air Force Base that is a joint service command which creates a unique multi-service community. Many of my students (and staff) are from military families, many of whom have parents deployed throughout the world. The staff of teachers and administration are proud to serve these children.
Building relationships with these students and their families is a large part of day-to-day life at my school.
These children have to move every two-three years, so they are constantly starting over with friends, teachers, and communities.
In the last four years, our school expanded to provide education for grades K-8 to better accommodate the needs of our children and their families. Our school has limited funding for the expansion and supplies for our classrooms.
My Project
In my class, we read a wide variety of literature from various sources and one thing that I think is very important is to teach students how to connect to the past through reading.
The Outsiders is the perfect novel for my students to learn about the decade of the 1960s.
They will also complete a research project about what it is like to be an "outsider."
I have taught this book in the past at different schools where I had a class set available. It helped students to be able to take the book home, so that we could use class time for discussions. Being able to analyze the book by rereading passages and having conversations about the connections is what literacy is about.
