This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The melodica is a wacky and wonderful instrument- it's part keyboard, part wind instrument, and all parts pure musical fun! Students have already experimented with my personal melodica in class and are loving it! Our school community has also made it known, however, that they would like to see more opportunities for students to engage with music outside of school, which got me thinking...

What if I could expand the musical offerings at our school to begin a melodica club for the musicians of APES?

Our community does not currently have a club or activity after school dedicated to music and would need more instruments to help support a club of as many students as possible.

Community service is a crucial part of the building and staff culture at APES, and we want to also impart the value of serving communities to our students. Musicians are in a unique position to serve their communities as they can provide opportunities for community connection at concerts, give lessons to others in the community, and more. This club will inspire the next generation of musicians to take ownership of their music education, explore an interest, AND build connections within the school community. Students will not only learn how to play melodica but will also be involved in the process of planning and performing at community events and peer mentoring other students in the club.
