I work with special needs students at a Regional School which caters only to children with severe and profound needs. Many individuals are not comfortable working with these students due to their limitations. However, I enjoy working with these students and supporting their parents. It is truly a joy for me to see my students grow and develop skills that can be used in various environments. As the School Psychologist, I mainly focus on Social Emotional Learning and facilitating social skills groups. In these groups, the students are taught social competence, peer engagement, self-empowerment, and identify as well as understand their emotions. To me, it is important for all students, regardless of their abilities, to learn how to positively engage with others, be competent in various social settings, understand their emotions, and feel empowered as they transition through each phase of their life.
Often school districts overlook the core values and needs of students with severe and profound special needs. Much of the funding is spent on the curriculum and technology to help students access the curriculm. However, not much funding is directed towards helping students regulate their emotions, improve their communication, and learn how to fully engage with others. Often, many students with special needs struggle with receiving accurate support and parents fear that the schools are not doing enought to fully address all of their child's needs. By implementing a variety play therapy practices, students with severe and profound special needs will be introduced to new strategies that will help teach them to engage with their peers, attend to tasks, and regulate their emotions within the learning environment. With these resources, students with severe and profound disabilities will learn how to effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to manage their emotions. Additionally, they will also learn how to achieve positive goals, demonstrate empathy for others, establish as well as maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions through play therapy. One activitiy that these requested resources will be used for is sand tray therapy and art therapy in regards to play therapy. Both are used as expressive forms of play therapy for children that helps them express inner thoughts, struggles, and concerns in a nonverbal approach.
