These materials will help me introduce and facilitate Play Therapy to my students during our weekly social skills groups. Given their developmental needs and cognitive abilities, Play Therapy is appropriate for students with special needs and will help build skills. Play therapy can also allow students with special needs to explore their feelings, their environment, and their relationships with parents, siblings, and peers. In addition to supporting students, this form of therapy can allow parents to take an active role in their child's growth and development. The lessons will be incorporated into our social skills groups and parent engagement activities. My goal is to assist children to build reciprocal skills (sharing, turn-taking), imaginative skills (pretending to feed a toy animal, cook pretend skills) and even abstract thinking skills. As the students become able to relate to others, more complex social skills are developed.
