Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work with eight wonderfully unique, imaginative, and bright 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. All seven of them have different strengths, weaknesses, and of course seven very distinct ways of processing and understanding information being taught.
Through my time teaching in SDC classrooms, I have learned that the one guaranteed way to "reach" most, if not all of my students is to present and teach information through the use of fun manipulatives and engaging hands-on activities.
Such activities allow the students to "see" the concept presented, explore, gain a sense of independence, and build an understanding that makes sense to them.
My Project
After many years of working in an SDC classroom, I have learned that one of the most important things most of my students need in order to self regulate and be successful, is access to sensory breaks. Often enough, these breaks need to take place in a specially designated area, removed/divided off from the main classroom, and designed to meet the sensory needs of all of my students. This area usually contains a wide range of sensory tools such as; fidgets, bean bag chairs, sand play, squishes, and visual/auditory play toys along with comfortable furniture of various textures and designs. This area is usually utilized during times of sensory overload, sensory diet, free time breaks, and a place to cool down. We currently have a designated area such as this, which we call the Calm Corner. Unfortunately, majority of the materials we own are 4 years old and slowly falling apart due to the heavy use they receive. It would be wonderful for me to surprise my students this school year with a brand new Calm Corner with storage to hold the supplies! My students would be beyond happy and appreciative to have a revamped area to go to during times of need.
