My Students

Middle school can be one of the most challenging times of our lives. I am lucky enough to have the opportunity to help middle school students learn and grow every day. Our school services a high poverty population. Our enrollment consists of about nine hundred thirty students, ranging from 6th to 8th grades, with a 50% free/reduced-price lunch rate.

My students have historically scored below average in reading on district benchmarks and state standardized assessments.

Because of this, they are enrolled in a program that focuses on reading comprehension.

My Project

This project requests Crayola washable markers and colored pencils, Ticonderoga pencils, scissors, Staples highlighters, and JAM folders with prong clip fasteners. Without the donation of these common classroom materials, we will simply run out. My students' families do not have the means to provide these necessary materials.

The new supplies will help my students feel successful with the reading projects and presentations they produce.

We currently have paper three-prong pocket folders that are shredded after so much use. Our colored pencils have been sharpened out of existence. I search the hallways every day for pencils that have been dropped and are now orphaned so that I can add them to our supply.

Being able to create a presentation of a completed project is a 21st-century skill that all students need in order to be successful in the workforce and/or applying for further education. I have noticed a huge difference in the amount of confidence that my students display when creating their project presentations now that our supplies are dwindling. The quality of their work hasn't changed, in fact, the quality has increased as the year has gone on. However, they tell me they are embarrassed at what they have produced, because they didn't have the supplies they needed, or their project was ripped or crushed because their folders are falling apart. My students loved having their work displayed, but now they would rather I not display it because they don't feel it's their best work.

My students have overcome many struggles with their reading ability and their confidence has grown in their ability to read and write. I don't want something as trivial as lack of supplies to set them back after all of the hard work they have put in so far this year.
