The ability to become independent readers and thinkers is a primary focus point for students in becoming college and career ready. Understanding and demonstrating proficiency in the reading process is key to success. Because of this, our state has implemented the Read to Succeed initiative. My students have historically scored below the district average in reading on our state state standardized tests, and district benchmarks. In addition, my students are, on average, 200 Lexile points below their peers. Thus, they are enrolled in our Read180 program that focuses on reading comprehension, by using small group direct instruction, whole group fluency instruction, and reinforcement of skills through computer programs and independent reading. My students must be able to show growth in the area of reading comprehension in order to exit this small group, direction instruction reading program and enroll in electives.
