Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Many of my students are super savvy when it comes to playing video games, but most have yet to discover the magic in reading. I spend a lot of time engaging them in stories by reading aloud to them, showing excitement to pick up a book and get lost in the tales of some of our favorite characters.
My students are amazing.
They hard workers and always ready to go that extra mile. We are a title one school in the heart of East New York, Brooklyn. My students love listening to stories on our listening center but all our headphones are old the cords get tangled. Also my students ears hurts and the become very frustrated. By having the listening center with headphones we would eliminate these problems and create a more engaging atmosphere! My students need a set of comfortable headphones for our listening center. My students will be able to listen to stories on tape and/or cd and be able to get started right away. They won't have to try and untangle the cords. Also, their ears will be more comfortable with these brand new headsets unlike the ones we currently are using without any padding. My students will begin to learn important concepts about print as they listen to stories being read aloud to them.
My Project
By having these headphones inside the classroom, my students will be exposed to new technology helping them learn about the world around them as well as preparing them for their future careers! They will also be able to hear rich language as they continue to practice reading along. My students will also be able to enjoy their stories on tape more by settling in more comfortably. Help us become more technologically advanced at our school! My students will use their new listening center materials on a daily basis. During independent reading, students who are on a lower reading level, and unable to sustain silent reading for more than ten minutes with the books available in their baggies, will have the ability to use a different means of technology to engage them during their independent reading periods. Through having a listening station available for them, they will begin to develop elements of independence and self monitor their learning. Some of the students in the room are lower level readers but cognitively they are able to comprehend higher level texts when read aloud to them. Through the availability of books on CD, new CD players, and headphones that drown out background noise, they'll be able to be cognitively challenged by higher text complexities.
This project will make a difference because it will begin to increase independent practices in my students.
The availability of a listening center allows them another option, or means, of practicing the necessary reading skills that will follow them throughout every other content area throughout the day and their entire future academic careers, as well.
