Children need more experience with non-fiction text beginning at a younger age. This will help increase their knowledge of reading and help them be even more successful in upper grades and in college when they will be required to read mostly non-fiction/informational books.
I have a very diverse classroom of upper elementary students who come from upper middle to poverty level homes.
Some students read on level and above level but 50% struggle to meet the state specified reading level in order to succeed. The students at my school have limited experience in life and have not traveled far from their homes/community. The students at my school love to come to school and love to learn because we provide a safe, warm and caring environment for all students.
My Project
Adding non-fiction/informational text to my classroom will open many doors for my current and potential students. We will use these books to help implement the new Common Core Standards. We will learn to look at the author's style of writing, compare texts on the same subject, and look for main ideas and details. We will use technology to research more information on topics that these books offer to our lives.
If you choose to donate to our classroom, you will be providing a chance for the students to gain more knowledge and life experience that I may not otherwise be able to provide.
Having non-fiction/informational books in our classroom will allow the students to go on adventures within the words on the page and learn about new experiences and gain new knowledge.
