My students are all black boys who live in inner city Baltimore. The challenges facing them are often not reflected in the stories and books they read. I want them to have exposure to an inspiring young man who looked like them and overcame far greater difficulties than we as a class can imagine.
My students are in 10th and 11th grade in a small self-contained special education classroom.
They are young men from all over Baltimore City, who have chosen to attend an all male charter school with a STEM focus. They are fun loving, funny, and clever but unfortunately, have all reached high school with substantial reading deficiencies. Last year, with the help of books like this, each student made at least 2 years of reading growth. These same young men can make at least as much growth this year with the help of engaging and inspiring books like this. They love reading non-fiction that has relatable people and interesting events.
A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier is the inspiring true story of a young man named Ishmael Beah who fled his home to escape rebels and was picked up by the government army. He is now 26 years old, and his memoir tells the story of his quest to regain his humanity after discovering himself capable of horrific acts. Our classroom units are focused around character traits that will build my students into successful young me,n. This book will help us learn the trait of optimism, and to always look forward with hope to the future. We are also requesting chart paper and post-it notes, so students can fully engage in the text. Many of my students learn by moving their bodies around the classroom. Literacy activities that engage them by moving them to posters around the room, and require them to annotate their texts with post-its, have proved to be very successful. These resources will help us reach our goal of making at least two years of reading growth this year.
Donations to my class will provide opportunity and possibility to students who have been forgotten by even their own schools.
Students in special education classrooms are often the last to receive resources. The chance to read an exciting book like this, and participate in engaging literacy activities will push my students along a path towards success. My students understand how important reading is to their futures and have become very invested in our goal of making two years of reading growth.
