This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach at a small, public school that serves one of the most under-served neighborhoods in the nation. However, my school is filled with two hundred and fifty of the most resilient, talented, and amazing students I have ever taught.
Last year, I put on the first production that our school has ever held, as we are a new, turnaround public school.
It was entirely student produced, written, directed, and acted. It was a major success, and the strength of the students, their quest for brilliance, and their inherent talents proved to me that this is a sect that needs to be fostered in our inner-city students.
Since our school has no budget for the arts, especially for drama, we cannot do a play or a musical that is well-known because we cannot afford the royalties. This leaves us in a sticky-wicket, however, my student with a Tyler Perry-sized talent for playwriting has written a full-length hip-hopera about a vampire coming of age.
In order for us to create the mood for our young vampires in stage, we are requesting a fog machine.
My Project
Creating a drama department is hard enough, but actually putting on a strong production with no budget it even more difficult. With your donation, you would be helping us create mood, scenery, and a strong production the students can be proud of for years to come.
Thank you so much for your generosity.
Donating to this project would show my students that the arts are still important, and that a good production can be entirely written, directed, and produced by students.
