Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students love to read! This is due in no small part to our school librarian who works tirelessly to help them choose books that help them fall in love with reading.
Each year our students compete in a Battle of the Books with students from other schools.
This past year was our eighth year competing and we look forward to competing again. Many of the students have asked when they can start reading for next year.
These titles are chosen from 'America's Battle of the Books' list based on their literary value and their ability to teach our students about important topics like tolerance. Titles like, "Insignificant Events in the Life of a Cactus," "Slacker," and "The Last Mapmaker," are award winning stories that impart the vital life lesson: always treat others with kindness. We are asking for a full class set of 'Slacker' because our team so enjoyed Gordon Korman's other book from our reading list last year. The class set will be shared among four different classes, with each class taking a turn to read the story aloud together.
It is so important for my students to be able to not only read these books, but then travel and discuss these books with students from around the district. This year our competition had such a significant impact. My students need this collaborative outlet more than ever!
By providing these books, you will be enabling my students to participate in this amazing event, fall in love with reading, learn important lessons on tolerance, and interact with other students from varied backgrounds. We will be able to connect from afar and develop a love of reading simultaneously.
