Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are a small, hands-on, project and adventure based high school. At SAEL, students are crew, not passengers. We challenge EVERY student to engage directly in their own learning. Our interdisciplinary curriculum is driven by a union of strong academic standards and place-based service projects.

Our students come from two counties and a variety of backgrounds but have in common the decision to attend a high school that challenges them to apply their learning to make a positive impact on their local and global community NOW.

They are enthusiastic, creative, curious, ambitious, hard-working and inspiring. 42% of our students this year qualify for free or reduced lunch and 40% will be the first in their families to attend college.

My Project

Each semester, our students who have worked hard to demonstrate full mastery in all of their classes are rewarded with the opportunity to engage in an enrichment course of their choosing for the final weeks of the semester. One of our offerings this semester is a course in Biotechnology. Students will learn about our expanding body of scientific knowledge related to DNA, genetics, and cell biology and how this new understanding is being applied in innovative ways in medical, agricultural, and environmental fields. As much as possible, student learning will be enhanced through labs and other forms of hands-on, student-directed inquiries. This class will support students to develop their understanding of biology, enhance their laboratory skills, and fire them up for future study and careers in STEM!

These ambitious and curious scientists need access to a thermal cycler in order to engage directly with PCR - a technique used to amplify and analyze small amounts of DNA.

This is a powerful process used in every field of biology. With the addition of a thermal cycler to our lab, students for many years to come will benefit from deep engagement in modern biotechnology experiments.
