I serve 800 K-6 students in my art classroom. We have a very diverse student body in an amazing school district who proactively works towards closing the achievement gap.
76% of students come from low-income families.
High expectations and quality resources are key to providing students with the environment they need in order to become first generation scholars.
28% of students are learning English. As they are taught in a language they have not yet mastered, they often fall behind academically. However, art is a universal language. Because we develop receptive language more quickly than expressive language, ELL students are able to visually see the processes and objectives for the artwork. This gives ELL students an change to confidently demonstrate what they can do. Art gives students who are adjusting to a new world an avenue to explore identity and culture.
If you are looking for a place to make the biggest impact, you have found it. Compared to neighboring school districts, 70% of my budget comes from donors like you. A quality education is key to breaking the cycle of poverty and reaching a more autonomous life.
The majority of this donation will go towards 90lb. paper, which is thick enough for painting without causing the paper to ripple. Black construction paper will be used for collage, pastel, and white charcoal drawings. The black backdrop will give drawing optimum contrast. Fine point pens will be used for outlining fine details in artwork.
With your support, students will get to explore multiple art mediums!
We currently do not have paper for painting. We have 30lb. paper for drawing, which is the same weight as copy paper. Painting on our drawing paper would cause rippling. Students are very eager to switch up mediums and move beyond drawings! Your donation would fill a lot of little creative hearts!
