My Students

Drumming builds a sense of community in schools. Our students need the opportunity to create that sense of teamwork and communication with their classmates. Unfortunately we do not have enough drums for our students to participate in this worthwhile activity.

My students come from a variety of ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds.

Our school is located in central North Carolina in a major metropolitan area. Our mission is to provide an education focused on the academic, social and emotional growth of every child through collaboration of the total school community.

My Project

Drum circles provide a portal into musical expression, making it an accessible experience for anyone at any age or level of ability. In it’s simplest form, the drum is an accessible tool for creative expression. The drum circle creates a non-competitive and inclusive environment that generates a unique atmosphere allowing the group to discover hidden talents and the individual to be empowered. For centuries drumming has been the central focus for community gatherings and celebrations. When an important event happened it was marked by the gathering of the people to celebrate; strengthening community ties which distinguished one community from another.

We all have a need to belong, to be part of a group who share interests and who come together for a common purpose.

Drumming allows us to make positive connections with others as we strengthen our communities and enhance our quality of life. Please help me to introduce this amazing activity to my students!
