I teach Language Arts at an Intermediate School in NYC that serves a diverse student population. Our students are coping with many different hardships at home. They look to their teachers to help fill in the gaps and guide them through the tough choices that they often face.
Many of my students do not have a strong parental presence at home.
In addition to teaching our subject matter, teachers must take on the role of surrogate parents. We often have to help our students navigate the many hardships they face as young adults in this difficult and often scary world.
My Project
I am always looking for new ways to reach out to my students and help them through the challenges that they face. Recently, I discovered books from Scholastic entitled "Choices", which deal with many of the hardships my students face such as divorce, sibling issues, and fitting in. There are also books that help them with the very adult choices that they will soon need to make, such as how to handle their own money.
My administration felt that the books would be a wonderful asset, but lacked the funds to put them into my students hands. I had a choice to make. Give up, or turn to people that I know are willing to help. People like you.
You have a choice.
You can read this proposal and let someone else make a difference, OR you can make the choice to help my students make the right choices in the future. Which choice will you make?
