My Students

My students are very energetic and excited everyday. They are not always enthusiastic about math but they are always exited about something! Our school has students from all economic backgrounds; we are one of the schools in our district that accepts kids out of other zones. Students that have been removed from other schools in the district for behavior issues or disciplinary problems are often sent here. This leaves crowded classrooms and a lot of disruptions. To remedy these disruptions, I have a couple students use laptops during class. They can go on Khan academy, learnzillion and use several other helpful platforms to understand the material better. Doing this means they are learning more and also not stopping other students from doing the same. Most of my students are very bright, they just don't have the resources to be able to learn the way they learn best.

My Project

It is impossible to teach the way every student learns. I wish I could. In public school it just is not feasible with the amount of students and lack of resources. Several students struggle in math. They get discouraged, they give up.

Thankfully, we have technology on our side.

Some students who dislike math try Khan Academy for the first time or Learn-Zillion and they understand it for once. I see the joy light up their faces when they answer questions correctly; they finally understand.

Currently I have one laptop for the students to use. I have 20-25 students in every class and one isn't enough. Hopefully with Donors Choose we can help more students' faces light up. School shouldn't be something they have to go through painfully, we have to find a way for them to love being here.
