Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
In our TK-4 SDC room, we have a diverse group of students with a wide range of needs. While they share many creative interests, such as art and music, they come to us at many different levels of development in academics, social communication, life skills, and self-management. We focus on meeting group and individual student needs when arranging the environment and planning the activities. For example, students who need high sensory input in order to focus are accommodated with the tools such as therapy putty, fidget toys, weighted vests, etc. In academics, we try to help our students access concepts by finding curriculum that engages all modes of learning. We find that when our students' needs are met, their positive attitudes shine through and they become available for learning.
Though our instruction, our goal is to provide students with the keys to their own future.
We want to support students to attain the highest level of independence and success possible. Not only does this include teaching them academic subjects, but also how to interact with peers and take care of themselves. With the right interventions, tools and proper support, these kids can absolutely achieve their best outcome.
My Project
The Zoo Phonics Language program uses a multi-modality approach to help teach letter sounds and reading. With this program, my students will develop the foundational skills to reading, which is very important to independence now and later in life. The program uses a whole-brain model so students are seeing, hearing, moving, speaking and touching to make connections to the sounds of the alphabet.
My students love Zoo-Phonics because it makes learning fun.
The Zoo Phonics program takes two of the things that they love (animals and music) and combines them into a program that will help them learn to be readers and writers.
