My Students

I have 18 amazing Pre-K students. They live in an urban area and face many struggles and challenges. School is a very important place for them. It is a safe place where they come to grow, learn, and explore. I truly love teaching them and helping them to build their foundation for future learning. They absorb new information like sponges and have an excitement for life. They always keep me laughing with their funny stories and sayings. I look forward to watching them grow and learn this school year.

My Project

In our math curriculum for Pre-K, we have an entire unit on shapes. Pre-K students notice different shapes even if they don't know that shapes have names. They start to notice properties of shapes, such as curves, sides, and corners. The best way for students to learn about shapes is to do so in a hands-on way and also by making a real-world connection.

Knowledge of shapes can help students to become successful in math and many other areas of learning.

When it comes to literacy, children are more likely to notice the shapes and lines in letters. This makes it easier for them to read and write letters. When the students are interacting with shapes, they are comparing and also grouping different shapes. Observing and categorizing are important science skills. Finally, students are also developing their problem-solving skills. This can be as simple as a child putting together a puzzle. Knowing shapes can help students to be more efficient in finding the correct spot for each piece. I would love to be able to provide my students with a variety of shape activities and manipulatives that can be used in lessons and during center time.
