Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

I teach at a secure treatment facility in Danville, PA. My students are all females ranging from the age of 13-20 years old and vary in literacy levels. Because of the unique environment of our school, my students do not have much access to the outside world and reading allows them to experience the excitement of adventure while also learning lessons through the characters’ experiences. These experiences often relate to their own personal experiences and cause them to reflect on their own mistakes.

All of my students come from extremely low socioeconomic backgrounds and lack support at home. Allowing them the opportunity to read while they are here promotes growth in learning and improves reading skills while closing the achievement gap.

Literacy is one of the most important factors that will influence a child's future success in life. This year students will be learning that reading for pleasure is a way of life and that it should not simply be considered a requirement of formal education.

My Project

One of my main goals as an English Language Arts teacher in this setting, is to promote Emotional Intelligence as well as learning through the pleasure of reading. I want my students to continue to use reading as a coping skill, as well as an escape when they need to. Being an adolescent can be difficult enough, let alone adding the pressures of the many struggles that these students have faced while growing up. I want my students to experience life through these characters and learn the difference between positive and negative choices. My students need multiple books in a series as well as individual novels.
