My students need materials for graphing. They need to have sharpened pencils in order to graph precisely, along with graph paper in order to graph neatly.
"Give a man a fish and he eats for a day. Teach a man to fish and he eats for a lifetime." In order to teach a man to fish, he needs a fishing pole. In order to teach my students how to graph, they need the proper materials.
My students are eager to learn.
They don't mind putting forward the effort to do good work, but they don't want to have to spend time setting up graphs by drawing untidy axes or by stamping their paper with an incomplete grid. They don't want to get bogged down by busy work in order to get to the objective of the lessons.
My Project
My students will have access to graph paper any time they need it. Due to budgetary constrains, I haven't been able to supply them with graph paper in the past. Those students that can't afford it have had to use graph stamps instead. The graph stamps are somewhat adequate, but they are not nearly as neat or efficient as graph paper. My students also need sharpened pencils in order to graph precisely. It's hard to make precise graphs with dull pointed pencils. It's also inefficient to have to sharpen their pencils down to nubs in order to get them sharp. An electric sharpener will make all the difference. However, some students have mechanical pencils and often run out of lead. The replacement lead will allow me to give them lead when they need it. The rulers will allow my students to draw straight lines in order to keep their graphs neat.
These materials will allow my students to get down to business when they need to graph.
They will have graph paper, a sharpened pencil and new, straight ruler without any dings on the side in. They won't need to spend unnecessary time stamping on graphs and interpreting results because they weren't able to graph as precisely as necessary.
