This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Ninety-five percent of our student population qualifies for free lunch. A lot of our students have been classified by others as being troubled, but they have grown to love our theater department.
They are diamonds in the rough and are always looking for ways to entertainment an audience.
Their grit has challenged me to be more creative in how I present opportunities. It has been great watching them blossom from improvisation to wanting to create their own works. My students are amazing.
My Project
One of the scenes that we want to amplify in the Wiz is Evilene's song "No Bad News." We want to have glow in the dark elements with the antagonist Evilene and her slaves. Evilene will have glow in the dark makeup, hair, and costume elements. Her winkies will also have glow in the dark elements with black light tape and sticks for their proton packs, and "bug spray" with the highlighter markers. The confetti is also black light reactive. All of these elements along with the costume will create an awesome effect with our black lights.
The multicolor fans, wigs, feathers, and other items will be used to enhance other scenes in our musical.
All of these were part of the student design. The experience of watching a design come to fruition can be a defining moment in a student's life. Students need to know that they can have a career in the arts. Combing literacy with the arts will help students the concept of going from idea to physical concept.
