I teach first grade at a large, financially strained elementary school. The students I serve are wonderfully diverse and many are English-language learners. As a teacher, I strive to address all state and national standards, while also nurturing the whole child.

In order to nurture the whole child, I strive to develop curriculum that engages the minds of my students, to support my students in making healthy food choices, to aid my students in developing healthy relationships and coping skills, and get my students physically active for at least thirty minutes everyday. One of my biggest challenges is getting my students active for thirty minutes everyday. This poses an interesting challenge as we have no sports equipment. Although I take the children outside to play games that do not require physical education equipment, games such as tag, fruit basket, duck, duck, goose, and red light green light can only played so many times without the children getting bored. Without physical education equipment, my students are not developing the gross motor skills they need to be successful in sports later in life. The lack of physical education equipment also prevents me from introducing my students to games such as soccer, basketball, four square, kickball, and flag football. This means that my students fail to develop valuable knowledge about sports in general.

With the Lakeshore Active Play Kit, a football, a soccer ball, a basketball, and a ball pump, I would be empowered to provide my students with a wealth of valuable experiences, get my students active, and teach my students about sports and games that they will play for years to come. Additionally, the balls from Lakeshore are durable, which means that they will last for more than one school year.

You will make it possible for my students to develop invaluable gross motor skills, learn about different sports, and get my students excited about physical education all over again! The skills and experiences that my students will gain as a result of these supplies will positively impact them for the rest of their lives.
